The Wawa trees still growing in the old sacred grove forest (Eban/Baamu) at the outskirts of Akrofonso-Akyempim town, near Agona, Ashanti Region of Ghana, is the inspiration for this – the 5th album from Prof Lungu released under the Baamu Records label, distributed through CD Baby disto. The wawa tree, also known as Obechi (in Nigeria), indigenous to Ghana and other parts of West/Central Africa, helps provide ecological balance for land and timber, for living.
Wawa wood, being lighter, is used in the manufacture of furniture and is preferred by major instrument makers (Fender, Gibson, etc.), for bodies and fingerboards for special edition guitars. Significantly, the importance of wawa tree to the Asantes (Akans/Ashantis) of Ghana is the representation of the wawa tree with cultural sign > > to symbolize "hardiness" "resilience", and "faith", being one of the symbols used/found in the production of authentic Kente cloths from Ghana.
The Eban/Baamu sacred grove forest in Akrofonso-Akyempim constitutes the single most important natural and cultural legacy bequeathed to the Chiefs, Elders, Youths, and Offsprings of the yet unborn of Akrofonso-Akyempim, Ashanti Region, Ghana.
Akrofonso-Akyempim (Agona-Ashanti) is reputed to be the final area the first chief priest of the great Asante Empire that defeated the British imperial army multiple times, Komfo Anokye (c.1650 – c.1720), was last seen, according to Asante oral history and legend.
Ask to see the Baamu/Eban when you are in the area and support the local tradesmen, storekeeprs, farmers, and other professonals.
